Heraklion International Airport (IATA: HER) is the primary airport on the island of Crete, Greece. It is located about 5km from the main city of Heraklion, near the municipality of Nea Alikarnassos. The airport is named after Heraklion native Nikos Kazantzakis, a Greek writer and philosopher. It is the country's second busiest airport after Athens International Airport.
The airport was opened in March 1939 and was served by the state owned line HEES with Ju-52 airplanes.
